Care and Maintenance

Cautions

* In this section, “chest” refers to any piece of Iwayadō Tansu furniture.

  • Natural lacquer may cause allergic reactions.
  • The metal fittings may cause injury with impact.
  • Do not stand or jump on your chest, or use it as a stepstool. Doing so may result in falls and injuries.
  • Do not drag your chest to move it. Doing so may result in damage to the underside or floor. Instead, multiple people should lift the chest.
  • Adjust the your chest to keep it level. Additionally, create space between your chest and the wall; insufficient airflow may result in mold or pests.
  • Keep you chest away from direct sunlight, heaters, and air conditioners. Prolonged exposure to sunlight, or excess heat or cold may result in cracking or discoloration.
  • To avoid discoloration, do not place anything hot (including containers filled with hot liquids) directly on your chest.
  • Do not use commercial cleaners or wax on any lacquered surface. Doing so may damage the lacquer coating.
  • Do not use cellophane or other tape on your chest. Tape removal can damage the lacquer.
  • The paulownia wood used in your chest’s drawers can swell with changes in ambient humidity and other conditions. This may cause the drawers to become difficult to remove or replace. If this happens, remove the affected drawers and place them in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
  • Use only a soft, dry cloth to clean your chest. Wipe off any moisture from your chest as soon as possible. Do not use chemical or silicon wipes!
  • If your chest has iron fittings, they may rust. Using a soft cloth, rub on a small amount of tea seed oil to stop rust and bring out luster.

Keeping Your Chest in Good Condition

  • Inspect your chest from time to time. Tighten any loose hinges or nails; prolonged use without doing so may result in breakage or injury.
  • In the event of insect-related damage, immediately apply insecticide and/or deterrent. Failure to do so may result in additional damage.
